Stockport Young Stars Awards

Office technology, sales and service provider Midshire has been given a second Silver Award from the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council for its commitment to working with young people in the Greater Manchester area.

The Working with Young People Award is achieved by a business when they demonstrate that they have made both internal and external efforts to help young people between the ages of 14 and 19 flourish in their professional lives. Internal activities include the provision of apprenticeships and work experience placements, whilst external efforts include a company taking part in career fairs or hosting mock interviews for example.

Midshire’s internal efforts have helped to develop many young people in the past year, with six new apprentices being taken on, raising the current number of apprentices to twelve, all working in varying roles within the business.

The business also provides work experience placements to Greater Manchester’s young students. Each student, including a student with down syndrome, undertook several days of work experience with Midshire, where they were placed in a variety of departments including: administration, accounts, and marketing. The company also recently agreed to take several students from the Seashell Trust, which works with children and adults with complex learning difficulties.

Midshire’s external efforts have been similarly extensive this year, with the company’s Warehouse Manager attending a local jobs fair, the aim of which was to help residents find out more about work opportunities. Midshire is also sponsoring two school awards at the Cheadle and Marple College students’ award evening on the 19th of December, where a member of staff will attend and present the awards.

The company’s Operations Manager Debbie Wilson has said that “Midshire take great pride in supporting young people in Stockport. Our Managing Director Julian Stafford personally welcomes all the work experience candidates and celebrates their success. We are delighted to receive a second Silver Award for our efforts, and next year we will strive for Gold.

The awards evening is coming at the end of an amazing year for Midshire. The company won a Talk of Manchester Business Award this month for Best SME Support, and was given a UK Corporate Excellence Award for Best Office Technology provider in the UK.

The Young Stars Awards Evening took place on Thursday the 8th of December at Stockport Town Hall. Other businesses that received Silver include Balfour Beatty, Ceracycloan, Harding Building Services Ltd, and Wates.
