Midshire host Chief Secretary to the Treasury

Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, travelled to Stockport yesterday to hear Andrew Stunell and his fellow local MPs make their case for the much-campaigned-for airport relief road.

Customer of Bredbury based Midshire Business Systems Andrew Stunell, Liberal Democrat MP for the Hazel Grove constituency, utilised the company’s meeting room facilities & Sharp Big Pad interactive screen for the latest meeting, explaining why Phase Two of the proposed relief road is desperately needed for the local area.

The A555 relief road is part of the South East Manchester Multi-Modal Strategy (SEMMMS), which aims to bring improvements to public transport and road connectivity; to reduce congestion and encourage safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists in parts of Cheshire East, Derbyshire, Stockport and Tameside.

Phase One was announced in October 2013, with up to £165million of government funding secured for a bypass between the M56 Manchester Airport and the A6 at ‘Simpsons Corner’ on the outskirts of Hazel Grove.

Phase Two will extend the road through to Bredbury, circling around ‘the Grove’ to Sainsburys.

After 25 years of campaigning for a by-pass, work is set to start in January 2015, creating 5,450 jobs in the process, with plans for opening in Summer 2017.
