Time to get on board with the new General Data Protection Regulations

Posted on

GDPR is a brand new regulation that intends to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU), the most significant change in over 20 years. It requires businesses in all EU member states to develop clear policies and procedures to protect personal data.

Leading office technology provider Midshire® has partnered with international digital security giant Gemalto to raise awareness of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is being introduced on the 25th May 2018.

A purpose-fitted double decker bus will be touring the country for two-weeks between the 23rd May and 8th June to help companies across the UK prepare for this new EU data protection regulation. Dubbed the ‘GDPR Clinic’ tour, the bus will stop at nine key locations between York and London.

The new changes are being introduced to update the Data Protection Directive (DPD) of 1995, which was developed before internet and cloud technology created new ways for data to be exploited.

John Kay, Technology Sales at Midshire comments:GDPR will affect every UK organisation that processes the personal data of EU residents. Gemalto’s GDPR Clinic is a really innovative way of giving organisations concerned about data protection an opportunity to brush up on the new regulations, and learn about how the changes might require them to refresh their internal policies.

“I’m delighted to be joining key representatives from Gemalto and a number of Identity, Encryption and Key Management experts on the bus in York, Leeds and Chesterfield, to help provide practical advice and help solve GDPR compliance challenges.”

The Yorkshire Law Society is one of many businesses that are already recognising the importance of keeping businesses up to date with data protection laws.

Trish Leach from the Yorkshire Law Society says: “Changes in data protection laws are important to all businesses. At the Yorkshire Law Society, we are wholly committed not only to adhering to the latest policies ourselves, but ensuring that our members have all of the information to take necessary next steps.”

John continues: “If a company is adhering to the Data Protection Act, then their approach to compliance may still be valid under GDPR, but there are new regulations and elements that could have serious financial implications if they aren’t met.”
