Most businesses have their data stored in a single location; either on an individual computer, or on a local server, which is usually located in their offices. To access this data, you have to log on to that specific computer or the network which the server is connected to. When logged on, you have access to your email, internet browsers, files, programs and any software that you may need.

This sounds normal and straightforward; however, it becomes problematic when you or your employees are not always in the office. What happens if somebody needs to access to their data when they are at a customer’s office or working from another location? There are now solutions that enable users to have the exact same files and programs, even the look and feel of your desktop computer, from any location and on any device which can connect to the internet, whether it is a desktop, laptop or mobile phone!

A Hosted Virtual Desktop (HVD), often shortened to hosted desktop or virtual desktop appears and performs exactly like any standard Windows based computer desktop. But, instead of the settings, data and operating system being stored locally on your device or your company’s internal server network, it is in fact hosted ‘in the cloud’. When you connect to the cloud hosted desktop, you are connecting to the files that are stored across multiple servers in a data centre, which are owned and managed by a hosted virtual desktop provider.

All your files and applications can be accessed over a secure internet connection, via an internet enabled device, making a hosted desktop easy to use, convenient and secure. They give you the flexibility to work from any location and have quick and easy access to the documents and information you need as though you were sat at your desk.

How does a Hosted Desktop work?

The reality of this question is it is very complicated. There are about 50 different technologies that have to work in conjunction with each other to make a hosted virtual desktop work and work well.

In its most basic form, a hosted virtual desktop is a computer, running remotely, that a user interacts with just like it was a PC siting right in front of them. Using the CitrixReceiver Application, a window will pop up on your home screen, that will become your portal to the virtual desktop. You will be provided with unique log in credentials which, when entered, will allow you to see your desktop functioning like you just booted up a machine. After a matter of seconds, it will be ready to use.

There are three key requirements for a hosted desktop to function

  • Internet connectivity
    • A computing device (e.g. laptop, desktop, thin client, tablet, smartphone)
    • A secure, managed, server environment

The hosted desktop is running on central processing units (CPUs) and random access memory (RAM) that is part of a much greater pool of resources within the cloud platform. All the data you create, save, access or delete is stored on cloud storage access networks (SANs) allowing your data to be fully protected from loss due to a situation like hardware failure.
