There are some other steps you can take to reduce your usage whilst abroad and keep your costs low.

Here’s our top tips:

Restrict your mobile to WiFi only

We all know that Wi-Fi coverage can be a little unstable in some locations, so if you want to make sure you’re using the Wi-Fi network and not your data, make sure you’re in Wi-Fi only mode. This can be done by setting your phone to airplane mode but then turning the Wi-Fi back on. NOTE: iPhone users – you can turn off Wi-Fi assist which is the setting that will use data automatically when the Wi-Fi is poor. This setting is at the bottom of your Mobile Data settings.

Turn Roaming off when you don’t need it

Not going to be using your phone every day? Some network packages charge overseas on a daily flat rate and these can be activated by simply being connected to a network. Turn off Roaming when you don’t need it to make sure you’re not accidentally activating the charge.

Check your apps

Mobile apps often use data in the background when you’re not actively using them – restrict which apps are allowed to use data in your settings. Make sure applications such as emails, newsfeed and social media apps aren’t set to use data when you’re not using them.
